Will a tree grow back if I grind its stump? If you grind stump properly, tree typically will not grow back, as stump grinding removes stump and major root crown 6 to 12 inches below ground, destroying growing points that produce sprouts. However, some aggressive sprouting species like aspen, willow, poplar, Tree of Heaven, and locust can still send up root suckers from remaining lateral roots even after stump ground, as roots remain alive for months using stored reserves and can sprout away from ground area. To prevent regrowth after grinding, you should grind deep enough 12 inches, remove wood chips, fill hole with soil, and treat any suckers with herbicide containing triclopyr or glyphosate as soon as they appear, or apply herbicide to fresh cut before grinding. If you only grind shallow 2 to 3 inches, regrowth more likely. So properly ground stump 6 to 12 inches deep usually prevents tree growing back, but for aggressive species, some root suckers may still appear from remaining roots, requiring follow up herbicide treatment to kill remaining root system completely and ensure tree does not grow back.
