Quest polybutylene piping and associated fittings were phased out and ultimately discontinued following widespread material degradations, class-action lawsuits, and catastrophic property damage caused by joint leaks. Research demonstrated that oxidizing agents, such as chlorine present in public water supplies, reacted with the plastic material and acetal fittings over time, causing them to become brittle, crack, and fail under normal residential operating pressures.
