Despite his immense contributions to British engineering and national infrastructure, Isambard Kingdom Brunel was never officially knighted during his lifetime. Historians attribute this partly to his premature death at the age of 53 from a stroke, coupled with the fact that engineering honors during the Victorian era were not awarded with the same frequency as military or political titles.
