The origin of the unique athletic moniker dates back to the autumn of 1922, when a newly appointed head football coach inherited a squad that had previously been known by various informal names like the Kendallites and the Yellow Jackets. Because the team wore new gold and black jerseys and dominated early opponents by roaring through them like a weather phenomenon, the coach initially wanted to name them the Golden Tornadoes. Discovering that Georgia Tech already claimed that title, he modified it meteorologically to the hurricane, and after a team vote adding gold to honor their uniform colors, the Golden Hurricane was officially born.
