The professional football club is called Everton because it was founded in the historic district of Everton, which is an inner-city area located in the northern part of Liverpool, England. In November 1878, members of the St. Domingo's Church congregation wanted to create a sports club to keep young parishioners together during the cricket offseason, initially naming the club St. Domingo's FC. By early 1879, as interest grew rapidly and people from outside the immediate church congregation wanted to join, the committee decided to rename the organization after the wider local district where they met and played, officially becoming Everton Football Club. The name cemented the club's permanent geographical and cultural identity within the Liverpool community, a bond that has remained unbreakable through generations of stadium moves and historic milestones.
