The club incorporates the name Benfica to honor the historic Lisbon parish where its foundational constituent associations originated. When the original football group Grupo Sport Lisboa merged with the multi-sports association Sport Clube de Benfica in 1908, they combined their identities into Sport Lisboa e Benfica to celebrate their geographical roots and community heritage.
