A sudden, drastic increase in household water pressure is almost always caused by a failing or completely broken pressure reducing valve (PRV) located near your main water entry point. The PRV is specifically designed to lower high municipal water pressure down to a safe, manageable residential level (typically 50 to 60 PSI). When the internal springs and rubber diaphragm inside the PRV wear out or fail, it stops regulating incoming pressure, allowing high municipal main pressure (sometimes exceeding 90 to 100 PSI) to surge directly into your home's plumbing pipes. Verification: Screw a pressure test gauge onto an outdoor hose bib to check if your PSI reading exceeds 80.
