When hot water runs brown specifically after water service has been temporarily turned off and restored, the discoloration is almost always caused by sediment buildup inside your water heater tank. When municipal lines or home valves are shut off and depressurized, the sudden surge of returning water scours the interior walls of your plumbing lines and stirs up heavy calcium sediment, iron scale, and rust particles resting at the bottom of the water heater tank. Because hot water lines draw directly from the tank, this stirred-up debris discharges exclusively through hot water faucets. Verification: Flush and drain your water heater tank to clear out the accumulated mineral sediment.
