Experiencing a larger or more swollen belly after non-invasive fat freezing (cryolipolysis) is frequently caused by post-treatment inflammation, localized edema, and tissue binding as the body mounts an immune response to process and clear the crystallized fat cells. In rare instances, an unexpected side effect called paradoxical adipose hyperplasia (PAH) can occur, where the treated fat cells instead react to the cold stimulus by growing larger and hardening into a permanent, distinct mass that mimics the shape of the applicator head.
