The word "atom" originates from the ancient Greek word atomos, which translates directly to "indivisible" or "uncuttable." Ancient Greek philosophers like Democritus believed that matter could only be divided into smaller pieces up to a certain absolute limit, beyond which the tiny particles could no longer be cut further. Although modern physics later proved atoms are indeed divisible into subatomic particles, the historical name stuck.
