The name "Allstate" was originally selected in 1931 following a nationwide employee naming contest organized by Sears, Roebuck & Co. executive Robert E. Wood. An employee suggested "Allstate" because the name was initially intended to describe an automobile tire line sold through the Sears catalog. Shortly after introducing the tire brand, Sears utilized the same catchy, comprehensive name to launch its groundbreaking direct-mail and catalog-based auto insurance company.
