General Motors did not entirely abandon Allison transmissions, but rather transitioned their light-duty and medium-duty integration strategies over corporate structural evolutions. Allison Transmission was originally a fully owned subsidiary of General Motors before being sold to private equity firms, after which it became an independent publicly traded entity. While GM continued to offer heavy-duty Allison automatic transmissions in its Silverado HD commercial truck lines, it developed and deployed its own proprietary internal transmission architectures for various light-duty consumer trucks and passenger vehicles to optimize manufacturing costs and supply chain integration.
