When a water heater sounds like a whistling tea kettle, it is suffering from severe calcium and mineral sediment scale buildup at the bottom of the tank. As hard water minerals form a thick crust over the heating elements or burner, pockets of water become trapped underneath and boil rapidly into steam. As this high-pressure steam is forced to squeeze its way upward through tiny microscopic channels in the dense mineral sediment layer, it produces a high-pitched whistling or screaming noise identical to a boiling tea kettle. Verification: Flush the tank immediately to remove the sediment causing the boiling steam pockets.
