A hot water heater that runs out of hot water after only five minutes usually points to a dip tube failure, a broken lower heating element on an electric tank, or severe mineral sediment accumulation. If the dip tube—which forces incoming cold water to the bottom of the tank—is cracked or broken, incoming cold water mixes instantly at the top and exits immediately through the hot water line. On electric tanks, a burned-out lower element stops the water from heating fully. In gas systems, pilot assembly issues or malfunctioning thermostats can prematurely shut down the burner cycle.
