Gonzaga University does not field a varsity intercollegiate football team primarily due to financial considerations, Title IX compliance, and strategic resource allocation focused heavily on maintaining elite, nationally competitive programs in basketball and other Olympic sports. Although the university previously sponsored a football program during the early and mid-twentieth century, rising operational costs, facility requirements, and the immense financial commitment needed to sustain a modern Division I football program led the administration to permanently discontinue the sport in the late 1940s.
