The unique and ferocious athletic nickname "Razorbacks" adopted by the University of Arkansas stems from a historic football game in eighteen ninety-one, when coach Hugo Bezdek described his victorious team as playing like a "wild band of razorbacks"—a regional term describing lean, aggressive wild hogs native to the wooded terrain of the Ozark and Ouachita mountains. Impressed by the fierce competitive imagery, students and faculty overwhelmingly voted to permanently change the official school mascot from the Cardinals to the Razorbacks in nineteen ten.
