People are removing spray foam insulation for several reasons. One major reason is moisture problems where spray foam was improperly installed or trapped moisture, leading to hidden rot, mold growth, and wood decay in roof decking or wall framing that went undetected because foam covered it, requiring removal to repair damage. Another reason is roof leak detection difficulty, as spray foam on underside of roof deck makes it hard to find leaks, and water can travel and cause extensive damage before noticed. Some homeowners remove spray foam due to off gassing and chemical odors that linger if foam was improperly mixed or applied, causing health concerns and indoor air quality issues. In some cases, mortgage and survey issues arise, especially in UK where spray foam in lofts has caused problems with mortgage lenders refusing loans because foam makes roof timbers hard to inspect. People also remove spray foam when renovating, rewiring, or needing access to framing, as foam is difficult to work around. Poor installation with gaps, shrinkage, or low R-value also leads to removal and replacement.
