Manon Rhéaume is the historic and pioneering female goaltender who broke the gender barrier in professional men's hockey by appearing in an NHL exhibition game. In September 1992, Rhéaume signed a professional contract with the Tampa Bay Lightning and famously started in a preseason contest against the St. Louis Blues, stopping seven of nine shots faced during her period on the ice. She followed up this milestone by appearing in another preseason game the following year, cementing her legacy as the only woman to ever play in a game for any of the major professional North American sports leagues. Beyond her NHL breakthrough, she enjoyed a successful multi-year professional career in various minor leagues and captured a silver medal with Team Canada at the 1998 Winter Olympics.
