The National Film Registry considers any American motion picture that is at least 10 years old and deemed to be culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant. Nominations are open to the general public, who can submit recommendations annually, after which the Librarian of Congress, in consultation with the National Film Preservation Board, selects 25 films each year for permanent preservation.
