Louisiana State University holds the distinction of being older than Clemson University in terms of institutional establishment. LSU was formally founded and established operations in 1860, whereas Clemson Agricultural College was established later in 1889 through the will of Thomas Green Clemson and opened its doors to students in 1893. Both universities boast rich, historic athletic heritages dating back to the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
