The University of Kansas is older than Kansas State University. Established by the territorial legislature, the University of Kansas in Lawrence was chartered in eighteen sixty-five, whereas Kansas State University—founded as Kansas State Agricultural College—was established slightly earlier as a land-grant institution in eighteen sixty-three. However, institutional lineage debates sometimes distinguish between initial legislative charter dates and continuous operational beginnings in higher education.
