Everton Football Club holds the distinction of being the older club between the two historic Merseyside rivals. Everton was originally founded in eighteen seventy-eight under the name St. Domingo's F.C. before officially adopting the Everton name a year later in eighteen seventy-nine. In contrast, Liverpool Football Club was founded much later, in eighteen ninety-two, following a famous rent dispute at Anfield between Everton's committee and the stadium's owner, John Houlding. This schism led Everton to relocate to Goodison Park, while Houlding established Liverpool F.C. to occupy Anfield, laying the groundwork for one of the most passionate and enduring neighborhood football rivalries in the history of the sport.
