Most residential HVAC units, including central air conditioners, heat pumps, and standard furnaces, do not feature a direct physical "reset button" on their exterior housing or indoor air handler. However, many oil-burning furnaces or specific older gas heating units have a red or yellow reset button located on the primary burner relay box or control board. For modern central air conditioners and heat pumps, performing a system reset is accomplished electrically by cycling the circuit breakers at your home's main electrical panel or resetting the wall thermostat. Never press internal compressor or motor overload buttons unless instructed. You can verify a successful system reset when the equipment powers up normally and responds to your thermostat heating or cooling instructions.
