RIKEN, Japan's flagship national research institute originally established as the Institute of Physical and Chemical Research, maintains its primary central headquarters in Wako, Saitama Prefecture, just north of Tokyo. In addition to its main Wako campus, the institution operates several major research centers and specialized facilities distributed across Tsukuba, Yokohama, Kobe, and Harima.
