The United States sources the vast majority of its domestic coal supply from several prolific geologic regions and coal basins, most notably the Powder River Basin spanning Wyoming and Montana, the Appalachian basin covering parts of West Virginia, Kentucky, and Pennsylvania, and the Illinois basin. These major mining regions produce steam coal for electricity generation and metallurgical coal for steel manufacturing, supplying both domestic utilities and international export terminals.
