The equipment ground wire on a subpanel terminates directly onto the subpanel’s dedicated ground bus bar, which must be securely mounted inside the metal enclosure. In any electrical subpanel—whether located in the same building or a detached structure—the ground bus bar serves as the collection point for all bare copper or green insulated safety ground wires coming from individual branch circuits, as well as the equipment grounding conductor running from the main service panel feeder cable. Crucially, in a subpanel, this ground bar must remain completely isolated from the neutral bus bar, meaning no bonding screws or green straps connect them. If the subpanel is installed in a detached building, the ground bar also connects directly to local grounding electrodes, such as driven ground rods, to ensure a proper fault protection path.
