Platinum group metals are heavily concentrated geographically, with the overwhelming majority of global supply mined from specialized ultramafic rock formations like the Bushveld Igneous Complex in South Africa and the Norilsk-Talnakh region in Siberia, Russia. Smaller commercial quantities are extracted from the Great Dyke in Zimbabwe, the Sudbury Basin in Canada, and the Stillwater Complex in Montana, USA.
