Qantas faced significant reputational damage and widespread public backlash during the post-pandemic recovery period due to persistent operational challenges, including massive flight cancellation rates, severe baggage mishandling issues, and prolonged customer service delays. The scandal further intensified following investigations into the sale of tickets for already-canceled flights and allegations concerning the improper utilization of lobbying influence to prevent competitor market entry. This confluence of systemic service failures and corporate governance scrutiny led to a sharp drop in consumer trust, high-profile executive leadership transitions, and mandatory compensatory payments to affected passengers, forcing a massive strategic focus on rehabilitating the airline's brand image and operational reliability.
