Before officially adopting the iconic moniker of the Ducks, the athletic teams representing the University of Oregon were originally known as the "Webfoots." This historic nickname originated in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, inspired by a hearty group of Massachusetts fishermen known as webfeet who migrated west to the Willamette Valley. Sportswriters later shortened the term in newspaper headlines, leading to widespread student adoption and eventually the transition to the beloved Duck mascot.
