Wilmington, Delaware, has historical roots dating back to early European settlement eras when the region was first colonized by Swedish explorers and colonists who established a settlement known as Fort Christina in honor of Queen Christina of Sweden. Later, under Dutch and subsequent English colonial administration, the surrounding area underwent territorial and naming shifts before being formally incorporated and named Wilmington in honor of Spencer Compton, the Earl of Wilmington, during the eighteenth century.
