The historical development of commercial insurance in India began during the British colonial era with the establishment of The Oriental Life Insurance Company in Kolkata in 1818. While initially founded by Europeans primarily to cater to expatriate populations, it marked the foundational stepping stone for commercial insurance operations in the country. Over subsequent decades, numerous indigenous and private joint-stock insurance entities emerged, eventually leading to the nationalization and consolidation of the sector before the modern re-opening of private insurance markets.
