Kobe Bryant identified proudly as an African American man, born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, as the son of former NBA player Joe Bryant and Pamela Cox Bryant. While his family background and cultural roots are deeply anchored in the African American community, his childhood and adolescence also included several years living in Italy while his father played professional basketball overseas. This international exposure gave him fluency in Italian and a broad multicultural worldview that shaped his sophisticated global persona throughout his legendary life and career.
