Before 1948 in the Bible, the land now called Israel was called by many names including Canaan, Promised Land, Land of Israel, Judah, Israel, Judea, Samaria, and Holy Land, depending on period, with modern political name Israel established in 1948 upon independence. In Old Testament, earliest name was Canaan, land of Canaanites, promised to Abraham as Promised Land around 2000 BCE, called Land of Canaan in Genesis. After Israelites conquered under Joshua around 1400 BCE, it became Land of Israel, Eretz Yisrael in Hebrew, divided into twelve tribal territories. After King Solomon's death around 930 BCE, kingdom split into northern Kingdom of Israel with capital Samaria and southern Kingdom of Judah with capital Jerusalem, called Israel and Judah. After Babylonian exile and Persian return, region called Judea and Samaria, Yehud under Persians, Judea under Greeks and Romans. In New Testament times, Roman province called Judea, with regions Galilee, Samaria, and Judea. Throughout Bible, also called Holy Land and Land of Promise. Before 1948, under British Mandate from 1920 to 1948, area officially called Palestine, British Mandate for Palestine, with British administration after Ottoman Empire rule from 1517 to 1917 when area called southern Syria or Palestine. So Bible names were Canaan, Israel, Judah, Judea, Samaria, Promised Land, Holy Land, not Palestine as political name which is modern, with Israel as ancient biblical name restored in 1948.
