Before adopting its internationally recognized modern corporate name, Exxon Corporation evolved from the historic Standard Oil trust founded by John D. Rockefeller, operating for decades under the primary banner of the Standard Oil Company of New Jersey (often referred to commercially as Esso). Following the landmark 1911 antitrust dissolution of the original monopoly, the New Jersey enterprise continued operating as Esso until it officially rebranded its corporate name to Exxon Corporation, later merging with Mobil to form ExxonMobil.
