Daikin was originally founded in Osaka, Japan, back in 1924 by Akira Yamada under the corporate name Osaka Kinzoku Kogyo Co. Ltd. (which translates loosely to Osaka Metal Industrial Company). Initially, the company specialized in manufacturing machine parts, metal tubing, and aviation ordnance before shifting its technical focus toward developing fluorochemicals and specialized refrigeration systems in the 1930s. As the company expanded its air conditioning expertise and international footprint, the corporate name was officially shortened and rebranded to Daikin Industries, Ltd. in 1960. Throughout its century-long evolution, this foundational metallurgical and chemical expertise has driven Daikin's rise into a dominant global leader in HVAC and refrigerant technology.
