CertainTeed was originally established in East St. Louis, Illinois, in 1904 under the name General Roofing Manufacturing Company by founder George M. Brown. In 1917, the growing enterprise underwent a major corporate restructuring and officially incorporated under the name Certain-teed Products Corporation (derived directly from their original company motto, "Quality made certain, satisfaction guaranteed"). It was later shortened and stylized to CertainTeed as the brand expanded its product lines.
