What vehicles can be imported into Australia is controlled by the Road Vehicle Standards Act 2018 and administered by the Department of Infrastructure. Since 2023, almost all road vehicles must be on the Register of Approved Vehicles or have a specific import approval before they arrive. For personal imports, the main pathways are the general used import pathway for newer vehicles that meet Australian Design Rules, the Specialist and Enthusiast Vehicle Scheme known as SEVS, which allows import of specialist performance, classic and rare models not sold in Australia, such as Nissan Skyline GT-R, Toyota Supra, and certain US pickup trucks, and the 25-year rule, which now applies to vehicles 25 years or older, allowing much easier import of classic Japanese, American and European cars as they are exempt from many modern ADR requirements. You can also import a vehicle you have personally owned and used overseas for at least 12 months under the personal effects import. All vehicles must have asbestos-free proof, meet biosecurity cleaning, and pass a workshop approval and inspection by a Registered Automotive Workshop in Australia. Electric vehicles can be imported but must meet high-voltage safety compliance. You cannot import vehicles with significant accident damage, and vehicles with left-hand drive generally must be converted to right-hand drive unless they are over 30 years old or qualify for conditional registration. Import taxes including 5% duty, 10% GST and Luxury Car Tax still apply.
