While funeral dress codes vary by culture and have become more relaxed in recent years, three colors that are traditionally considered inappropriate to wear to a Western funeral are bright red, bright yellow, and bright orange or other neon flashy colors. Black is the most traditional and respectful color for funerals in Western cultures, followed by dark navy, charcoal gray, and other muted dark tones. Bright red is seen as too festive, attention-grabbing, celebratory, and even suggestive, as it draws attention to the wearer rather than showing respect for the deceased and grieving family. Bright yellow and orange are similarly seen as cheerful, sunny, party colors that clash with the somber, mournful tone of a funeral and can be perceived as disrespectful or tone deaf. Other colors to avoid include neon green, hot pink, and flashy patterns. In some cultures, white is also inappropriate, as in some Western funerals white is associated with weddings, while in some Eastern cultures white is the traditional mourning color. The general rule is to avoid anything bright, flashy, revealing, or celebratory, and instead choose dark, subdued, modest clothing that does not draw attention, showing respect and solemnity for the occasion.
