Landlocked U.S. states that do not border warm tropical ocean waters—such as Colorado, Kansas, Wyoming, Montana, Idaho, Nevada, and Utah—never experience direct hurricane landfalls. Because hurricanes require warm ocean water to fuel their convective engines, they rapidly weaken into ordinary rainstorms or dissipate entirely soon after moving over inland terrain.
