To hang a large mirror safely, you must use heavy-duty hardware anchored into wall studs or with heavy-duty wall anchors rated for well above the mirror weight. For large mirrors over 25 pounds, the best methods include French cleats, which are two interlocking beveled metal or wood strips, one screwed into at least two studs and the other attached to the mirror back, distributing weight evenly and holding 100 to 300 pounds depending on size. Heavy-duty D-rings with braided steel wire are also common, with D-rings screwed into the mirror frame sides and wire rated for double the mirror weight strung between them, then hung on heavy-duty picture hooks or screws into studs. For frameless large mirrors, use mirror clips or J-channels at the bottom to support weight plus top clips or adhesive mirror mastic designed for mirrors. Always locate studs with a stud finder and use #10 or #12 wood screws 2.5 to 3 inches long into studs. If studs are not available, use toggle bolts or molly bolts rated for 100 pounds each in drywall, with at least two points of support. Never use only small nails, Command strips, or plastic anchors for large mirrors, as they can fail. Have a second person help lift and level, and add felt bumpers behind to protect the wall and keep it stable.
