While chair rail and wainscoting are frequently installed together as companion architectural elements in traditional interior design, they serve distinct structural and aesthetic purposes. A chair rail is a single, narrow strip of decorative molding installed horizontally across a wall at approximately one-third of the room's height—historically designed to protect plaster walls from being scuffed by the backs of chairs. Wainscoting, on the other hand, is an entire system of protective and decorative wall paneling that covers the lower portion of a wall, typically extending from the floor up to the height of the chair rail. While a chair rail can stand completely on its own as a simple wall accent without any paneling beneath it, it is also frequently used as the crowning cap or top edge that finishes off traditional raised-panel, beadboard, or flat-panel wainscoting installations.
