Chemically, crack cocaine is produced by dissolving powder cocaine hydrochloride in a mixture of water and a base such as baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) or ammonia, and then heating it until the mixture forms solid, crystallized chunks. When sold on the street, illicit crack is frequently cut with various inert adulterants, local anesthetics, and cutting agents to increase dealer profits illegally.
