There is no official list of RV brands to stay away from, and every major manufacturer produces both good and problematic units, but RV service data and owner forums point to some patterns to be cautious about. Generally, you should be extra diligent when buying entry-level, high-volume brands that prioritize low price over build quality, particularly during years of rapid production expansion like 2020 to 2022 when demand surged and quality control suffered across the industry. Some brands that frequently appear in complaints about fit and finish, water leaks, and warranty service delays include certain low-priced product lines from Thor Industries and Forest River that are built to hit a very low MSRP, such as some Coleman by Dutchmen, Dutchmen Aspen Trail, Forest River Wildwood, and Coachmen Clipper models from peak COVID years. This does not mean these brands are junk, but they require more thorough pre-delivery inspection. You should also stay away from any brand that does not have RVIA certification, does not offer at least a 1-year warranty, or has no established dealer network for warranty service. Perhaps more important than brand is avoiding specific conditions: avoid any RV with signs of delamination, soft spots in roof or floor, or heavy water damage, and avoid buying a new RV without a professional independent inspection. Focus on dealer reputation and inspection rather than brand alone.
