Names that no longer exist or are extinct include very old ancient names that fell out of use, such as medieval English names like Ethelred, medieval names like Hildegard for girls, and ancient Roman names like Cassius that are rarely used today, though few names truly disappear completely. Names no longer exist in common usage include obsolete names from history like Ethelwulf, Aethelred, and Godwin for boys, and Etheldreda and Mildred for girls, which were popular in Anglo-Saxon times but now extinct except in historical records. Other names that no longer exist include Puritan virtue names like Fly-fornication and Praise-God from 17th century, and some Native American names that lost usage. However, most names still exist in records but are extremely rare, not truly extinct, as naming is cyclical and old names can return, like Atticus and Silas returning recently. So what names no longer exist? Truly extinct names are ancient names with no current bearers, like many ancient Egyptian or Babylonian names, but in modern English, names like Ethelred and Ethelwulf are effectively extinct with no babies named that in last 100 years, though they exist in history books.
