In the modern Gregorian calendar, August is the eighth month of the year, following July and preceding September. It is the final full month of summer in the Northern Hemisphere and the final full month of winter in the Southern Hemisphere. Historically, it was originally named Sextilis in the ancient Roman calendar when it was the sixth month of a ten-month year, before being renamed in honor of Roman Emperor Caesar Augustus and adjusted to contain 31 days.
