The question of the oldest franchise in the National Hockey League involves looking back at the founding of the league itself in 1917, where original charter member organizations laid the permanent foundation for professional hockey. While teams like the Montreal Canadiens and the Toronto Maple Leafs trace their organizational lineages directly back to the very birth of the league in 1917, the Montreal Canadiens specifically hold the distinction of being the longest continuously operating professional hockey club in the world, having been founded years earlier in 1909 to play in the National Hockey Association before transitioning seamlessly into the newly formed NHL. These legendary Original Six franchises carry immense historical reverence, boasting decades of rich traditions, historic sweater designs, and a legacy of legendary players who shaped the sport into a global phenomenon long before modern expansion teams entered the league landscape.
