The oldest surviving department store chain in Tokyo—and all of Japan—is the Nihombashi Mitsukoshi Main Store. Tracing its corporate origins back to 1673 when it started as a humble kimono fabric shop named Echigoya, it officially transitioned into a modern Western-style department store in 1904, later expanding its grand Renaissance-style headquarters into a nationally designated Important Cultural Property.
