Travelers from visa-exempt countries like Canada and the United States visiting the European Schengen Area must prepare for the implementation of the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS). This electronic travel authorization requires visitors to complete an online security pre-screening application and pay a processing fee prior to departure. In addition, the EU's Entry/Exit System (EES) digitally tracks non-EU visitors through automated biometric registration—including facial scans and fingerprints—at physical external borders, replacing traditional manual passport stamping.
