The title of the hottest place on Earth is frequently contested between Death Valley in California, USA, and towns like Furnace Creek or regions in the Lut Desert of Iran and Death Valley's Badwater Basin. Death Valley holds the officially recorded air temperature world record of 134 degrees Fahrenheit (56.7 degrees Celsius) set in July 1913, while satellite observations have recorded blistering ground surface temperatures exceeding 159 degrees Fahrenheit (70.7 degrees Celsius) in Iran's Lut Desert.
