The history of the Hong Kong stock market dates back to the mid-nineteenth century with the formation of the Association of Stockbrokers in Hong Kong, followed by the formal establishment of multiple separate exchanges over the decades. To unify trading and enhance market regulation, the Stock Exchange of Hong Kong (SEHK) was officially consolidated in 1986, merging previous regional floors into a single centralized entity. In subsequent years, the exchange underwent major structural modernization, including the launch of modern electronic trading systems, the cross-border Stock Connect programs linking mainland China exchanges, and its evolution into a premier global capital raising and financial hub.
